Workout and Thoughts About My Gym
Hello again. Well, so far so good. I've managed to post 2 days in a row. Well, technically, it's only been a few hours since I last posted. I don't know if ya'll can see the time, but it's 2:34 in the morning. I told you: I don't get off work until 11 pm. Anyway, today wasn't nearly as bad as Monday. By the way, due to the fact that a winter storm came through and driving was a stupid idea at best, my workout on Tuesday was shoveling, sweeping and salting my and my neighbor's driveways, sidewalks, and porches. It took about 40 minutes, so I'm counting that as a win. But, back to today. I managed to do 3, 4, and 2 pushups off my knees tonight, plus 6 negatives. The rest of my reps were done on my knees, of course. Pull ups were moderately better today. I managed to do 2 full sets with less assistance, but the last set I only got a 3 before I had to give myself a little extra help. By the way, I do pull ups on the assisted pull up/dip machine. You can set it to "help" you do your reps by setting it to a percentage of your body weight. For instance, if I set the machine to 130 lbs which is roughly 60% of my body weight. That means that I'm actually pulling about 40% of my body weight. The goal, as mentioned before it to get to 50% of my body weight, relatively quickly. And I'm getting there. After all that, I jogged at a fairly respectable speed (4.6) for 15 straight minutes on the treadmill, varying my incline between 0 and 2.0. That's freaking awesome! Seriously, I'm super excited about that. Again, much better than Monday, but damn these push ups and pull ups are tough. But, I'm determined. I will be able to do at least 30 push ups (off my knees) and at least 10 pull ups at least before the end of this year, but hopefully way before that.
Okay, so, thoughts about the gym. My gym in particular. I go to Planet Fitness. But I hate gyms in general. I would much rather stay home, by myself and do my thing. Mainly because I don't really like being around people who might want to talk to me. I got over that whole, "what if people look at me?" thing years ago. But, PF works for me for a few reasons:
1. The operating hours are very convenient for me because of my schedule and it's on my way home.
2. Can't really beat the price.
3. It's so freaking huge and I am usually there so late that there are relatively no people there.
4. Variety.
5. The "Lunk Alarm"
6. The dress code.
Look, PF is not for everyone. I have watched many YouTube videos of "serious" lifters, exercise enthusiasts, and others making fun of PF. Most of those people make fun of it for reasons 4-6 that I mentioned. Here's what I have to say to all of those people: This is not your gym, so shut up!
PF is geared toward getting people to exercise. Who cares if there's a 50:1 ratio of cardio equipment to weight equipment? I don't work for the company, but I appreciate that they encourage people to just move. To exercise. To better themselves. Yes, they offer services that I don't care about, but so what? I don't have to trip over a bunch of free weights and bars. I don't have to look at someone half naked showing off in front of a mirror. I don't have to listen to the bang and clang of weights hitting the floor or the guttural, animalistic growls of power lifters. Do I think just about anyone can get in a good workout there? Sure. Do I think it is the best gym? No. But, that doesn't mean people should make fun of it or the people who go there. If someone is just getting started or simply wants to get away for a little while to do something for themselves, I think it's a pretty good place to go. If people decide they want more and want to start lifting heavier or try Cross Fit or take up boxing, then they'll go to those places. Those videos really bugged me. I don't give a rat's ass about what they might think about my membership at PF, but it bothers me that they are making fun of people. That's not nice. You can't make a whole video where you are making fun of people for attending a particular gym and then tell them at the end, "If you're serious about wanting to lose weight, join a real gym where people like us will be there to help you". I'm dead serious. One of the videos did that. It didn't make sense to me either.
Okay, I think that's enough rambling for today. Tomorrow is a fast work out so I'll, hopefully, be home and in bed way earlier. Until tomorrow. Be safe. Be blessed. Be you!
